Artist's Description

This piece started with a muddy, chipped, ornate frame rescued from the trash. I roughly patched up the missing decorations and painted it white with a semi-gloss interior latex paint.
Later, I decided to paint a large magnolia flower inspired by the trees just outside my front door. Along the way I wondered if I could paint a shadow on the frame that would give the illlusion of the flower poking out past the pictute plane. Much to my surprise, it worked!
The effect in real life is startling. For this print site, I added a black background to accentuate the contours of the frame and to faciliate a black gallery wrap, museum wrap, acrylic, or aluminium print I don't think it would look good as a frame within a frame.
What I like the best about this oblect is that the painting is un-refined and sketchy, the frame is real and the cast "shadow" is just a stroke of gray paint—but it works !

About Mark Lunde

Mark Lunde

Thanks for visiting my site. I’ve been planning to build this for a long time, and, well here it is. What’s here is a history of my artwork spanning about 45 years. Many of my earlier pieces are missing and scattered around the world, so…if YOU have any artwork done by me, email me a jpeg or a photo and I’ll post it. Aside from NYC and SoCal, I know there are some sketch books and watercolors floating around Paris France that I would love to see again.- I have been painting and drawing since I was 9 years old. Not constantly, but when asked by a teacher in third grade what I wanted to be, I answered “I want to be and Artist." (You can...
